Spennymoor Town Council Elects a New Mayor

Spennymoor Town Council is pleased to announce that a new Mayor has been elected, Cllr Liz Maddison, and would also like to thank the outgoing Mayor, Cllr Elizabeth Wood for her service over the past 16 months.

Cllr Liz Maddison said, “It is a great honour for me to have been appointed as Mayor of Spennymoor and to follow the proud tradition of previous Mayors in representing our Township.   

Over the years, since first appointed as a Councillor in 2003, I have witnessed many changes in our Town.  I have also seen the rapid expansion of information technology and the advance of social media with data being available 24/7.  We now compliment our existing and traditional forms of communicating in the press and by newsletter with live streaming of meetings via the internet onto our home computers. Spennymoor was one of the first Councils in County Durham to start recording meetings and sharing this information to the public some years ago.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the NHS, doctors, nurses, the keyworkers such as those in retail who have been keeping the shelves stocked, the community volunteers and the many other organisations which have provided help and services to our residents during this current crisis.

I would also like to thank the retiring Town Mayor. Cllr. Elizabeth Wood for her commitment to the role and her friendship to me as Deputy Mayor, as well as my thanks to Council staff and Members for their contribution during what has been a very difficult year so far. 

The Covid situation will bring many challenges for Spennymoor and County Durham but with the strength, commitment and support of our local Community we will overcome these current difficulties and together our Community will grow stronger.

This journey will continue for some months but as a community together keeping ourselves safe and strong we can look forward to better times ahead.
