Spennymoor Town Council Accessibility Statement
Our aim is for this website to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA standard. WCAG is an international standard that defines how to make web content accessible to people with disabilities.
We have taken the following steps to make our website accessible:
- We have used high contrast colours and fonts. This makes the text easy to read for people with low vision.
- We have provided alternative text on images. This means that people who are blind or have low vision can understand the images.
- We have made sure that forms are accessible to keyboard users. This means that people who cannot use a mouse can still use the forms.
- For those who are blind, visually impaired or partially sighted, we have made sure that the website can be navigated using a screen reader.
However, there are some areas which we are actively looking to improve. These include:
- Some legacy images may not have alternative text.
- Some of the navigation menus may be not easy to use with a screen reader.
What we’re doing to improve accessibility
We are committed to improving the accessibility of our website. We have plugins installed which aid the use of the website, these are regularly monitored and edited where possible to make our website more accessible. When adding new content, we make sure that it is accessible to everyone by adding alternative text to images, using the right colour contrast, and ensuring that the text is easy to read.
Specifically, we take into consideration:
- Images: All images should have alternative text that describes the image in words. This is important for people who are blind or visually impaired, as they will not be able to see the image.
- Colour contrast: The colour contrast between the text and the background should be high enough so that people who are visually impaired can easily read the text.
- Text: The text should be easy to read, with a clear and concise font and font size. The text should also be free of any errors or typos.
We will continue to monitor the accessibility of our website and will make changes as needed.
